Grieg - Peer Gynt (complete incidental music)

The main work will be the complete incidental music composed by Grieg for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. The complete score includes arias, choruses and orchestral pieces. Grieg later used much of the music in two orchestral suites, now some of the best-loved classical music of all time, with tunes such as Morning Mood, Anitra’s Dance, Solveig’s Song and In the Hall of the Mountain King. The complete score was rediscovered in the 1980s and was performed in Norwegian at the 2001 Proms, the musical elements held together by an English narration adapted from the play. There has not been an English translation of the whole work, until now. Southampton Philharmonic Choir has commissioned an English libretto from Beryl Foster, an established librettist and Grieg expert. The narrator will be the acclaimed actor Samuel West, recently nominated for the 2010 Olivier Award for Best Actor for the play Enron. A unique event, not to be missed!
