Poulenc - Gloria
Rachmaninov - The Bells (in English)
Rachmaninov - Vocalise (for soprano and orchestra)
Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No 2
The main choral work will be Rachmaninov’s rarely performed choral symphony “The Bells”, to be sung in English. The original Russian text was freely adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem of the same name. Each movement uses a different type of bell to portray a stage of human life – silver sleigh bells for birth and youth, golden wedding bells, bronze bells of warning, and the iron death bell. The work was composed for soprano, tenor and baritone, with choir and a large, colourful orchestra. The other choral work is Poulenc’s joyous setting of the “Gloria”. The concert also includes two highly popular Rachmaninov works – his Piano Concerto No 2 and the hauntingly beautiful “Vocalise” for soprano and orchestra. Soloists will be announced nearer the concert.
